What do you think is the significance of the last line of chapter 4?

The significance of the last sentence in chapter four is that the mystery of someone in the Radley house is revealing to be true. When Scout heard the laugh she became even more scared of the Radley house, but if she told Dill or Jem they would ignore her and say she is still scared. Scout might still be scared, but determined to find out the truth and she will have to make great strides to find it. "I had heard another sound, so low I could not have heard it from the side walk. Someone in the house was laughing." (54) The laugh was low so it must be a man in the house. Harper Lee is adding in this detail because it adds a lot of questions about the Radley's house and it attracted me to want to know more. The next question to the Radley's house mystery is, what type of person is in the house? Was the laugh an evil laugh or was he just laughing at Scouts crash in the tire? Is he the man putting the tinfoil packages in the tree?

  1. When the kids here the strange noise "laugh" inside of Boo radleys house remains a bit of a mystery. Scout becomes increasingly scared of Boo after she hears the sounds. Boo may have known she was listening so he made the strange noise "laugh" to get her away from his house. It is also a strong possibility that Scouts imagination is running wild as a child mind does. One will never know what really happened that day inside Boo Radleys house

  2. By Harper Lee adding the laugh from inside the house at the end of chapter four, she adds a lot of mystery. This makes the reader want learn more about who is in the house. It also makes Scout want to know more about who is in the house. This detail Harper Lee added really made me wonder who was laughing, and why they were laughing.

  3. The addition of the laugh from inside the Radley house answers some questions and unravels a few more. This answers the fact that someone actually lives inside the Radley house and that it isn't uninhabited. As to what Andrew stated, due to the young age of Scout , the possibility of her fear messing with her thoughts is strong. Why was the person inside of laughing?
