Free Response Post: Who stabbed Bob Ewell?

At the end of night in which Bob Ewell stabbed, Mr. Tate comes to the conclusion that, "I may not be much, Mr. Finch but I'm still the sheriff of Maycomb County and Bob Ewell fell on his knife. Good night sir." Mr. Tate then stomped away from the Finchs' house and left.
It is obvious that Mr. Tate and Atticus realize that Bob Ewell did NOT fall and his knife and die. This conclusion was only made to protect Jem from the other possible outcome, that he stabbed Mr. Ewell in an act of self defense. If people thought that Jem had stabbed Bob what would they think of him? How would he be accepted in the community? The most interesting thing is however is that the other hypothesis in which Jem stabbed Mr. Ewell is only made up to protect Boo Radley. The only one who really realizes that Boo did it is Atticus. Atticus made the hypothesis that Jem stabbed Mr. Ewell because he thought Jem would be able to handle it, unlike Boo Radley. Boo Radley's reputation is already saying that he is insane, that he has stabbed people, and he has been in a gang. If people knew that Boo stabbed Bob Ewell, then the town would never accept him into the community.
Will people ever find out that Boo Radley did it?
Is there any chance that Jem did it or that Mr. Ewell fell on his knife?

  1. I think that since Boo Radley is known as quiet and shy the police will not turn him in to avoid rumors around town. Boo was only trying to help the kids and everyone knows that. Bob Ewell put it upon his self and Boo Radley should not be put in prison. Does anyone agree?

  2. I think that Jem did not kill Bob Ewell. This is because he had a broken arm, and was knocked unconscious on the ground. This would make it nearly impossible to stab someone. I think that Boo Radley is the one that killed Bob Ewell, because he has always been looking out for the Finch children. Like Nick has mentioned, his reputation is that he's hung out with the wrong crowd, and is more likely to stab someone than Jem, who in the last few chapters, Harper Lee has been trying to show that he's becoming more Atticus-like, which means avoiding violence. However, it is also very likely that Mr.Ewell could've fell on his knife as well. "A prickly stubble on the face told me it was not Jem's. I smelled stale whiskey" (352). This shows that Bob Ewell was drinking, and a drunk person, while walking around with a knife, could've lost his grip and fell on his own knife. Why do you think Bob Ewell came after the children instead of Atticus? Will Boo Radley continue to make appearances now that he has revealed himself back to the society again?

  3. People will never find out that Boo did it for numerous reasons. First and foremost because probably the only other time anyone will see Boo will be when he is carried out as a corpse. He will take his secret to the grave and scout who realizes the massive importance of this will never tell. Also Atticus will never tell and bring up the storm of trouble that will follow and Jem lay in a pain induced sub consciousness and Link Deas has quite the quote[369]."to my way of thinkin Mr. Finch, taking the one man whos done you and this town a great service and an' draggin him in with his shy ways into the limelight - to me thats a sin". Mr. Link Deas will never "bring Boo into the limelight" and he will not be part of telling people that Boo is the one who killed Mr. Ewells.
